Shadin Avionics AIM Enables First FAA Certification of a Class 2 iPad® EFB

Shadin Avionics recently announced the flyTab Aircraft  Interface Module (AIM), which received an FAA TSO certification in June of 2013, has now been certified on a NAV CANADA CRJ200. This certification is the first FAA-conforming on-aircraft implementation of an iPad-based Class 2 electronic flight bag (EFB). The AIM is a key component of the flyTab system, developed in conjunction with Shadin Avionics, Avionics & Systems Integration Group (ASIG) and SpatiOS, an AppOrchard company.

During the installation, two Apple iPads were integrated into the CRJ200 with flyTab EFB hardware mounts, power conditioning modules and the Shadin AIM. Operationally, NAV CANADA’s Flight Inspection team will utilize Jeppesen Flight Deck Pro for aeronautical data with flight referencing upon FAA and TCCA Aviation Authorities STC approval of the system.
“The system was assembled, installed and tested in accordance with strict FAA certification processes, and we are very pleased to have achieved this successful operational milestone.” said Van Simmons, Director of flyTab SDK and iOS AppDev. “This is another significant milestone in the implementation of this rapidly evolving technology, stated Dan Nelson, CEO Shadin Avionics. “This installation demonstrates Shadin Avionics’ and the flyTab team’s commitment to turning this highly talked-about concept into a reality.” The flyTab Software Developers Kit (SDK) enables airlines, OEMs and aircraft manufacturers to easily develop, deploy and support applications and enterprise tools for iOS, fully leveraging the flexibility and low cost of the iPad platform. Upon issuance of the AML-STC by the U.S. FAA, TCCA and EASA certification will be completed for the supplemental type certificate, making flyTab Class 2 iPad EFB solutions available for transport category aircraft operators across the globe. The flyTab team will complete its second FAA-conforming aircraft, a NAV CANADA DHC-8; and third, Aramco Services B767-2AX, soon after the FAA issues the AML-STC. Configuration assessments for a variety of Part 27 and 29 rotorcraft are also in the works.
Shadin will be exhibiting at HAI HELI-EXPO 2014 Booth #8824.
